Born in 1893 as Arthur Walter Palmer but in later life claimed to be the brother of Rose Champion nee Demaus. Rose was the daughter of Jane De Maus and father unknown so it is possible that Arthur was her step brother. Maybe Jane was his mother but in 1893, she was 48 which is stretching her fertility but more than that, she was in a common law marriage to John Henderson and with a 9 year old son, Seton. The birth certificate for Arthur Walter Palmer records his mother as Elizabeth Palmer, 20, born in England so clearly, Jane Henderson was not his mother but his father is unknown.
Per his brother-in-law M. E Champion who was interviewed by military personnel (included in Arthur's military record) "Palmers mother was married twice, her first husbands name was De-Maus, after De-maus died she married a man named Palmer but she had no children to her second husband Palmer, De-maus is therefore the correct name of the man who is wanted on the attached warrant."
A W De Maus served overseas with the NZ EF and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His war service started 19/9/1916 and finished 25/11/1919.
Arthur married Catherine Logan at St Pancras in London in Jul, Aug, Sep 1919. They made their home in Auckland and had a son, Walter Robert about 1920. Arthur Walter De Maus died in 1935 aged just 42. He was buried at Waikumete Cemetery Auckland.
Arthur Walter adopted the surname De Maus. I do not understand why. James De Maus had been dead for 20 years by the time AWP was born. He also claimed o be the brother of Rose Champion. He may have been a step brother if he and Rose shared the same father.

Both of these children attended school in Dunedin and appear on school records under the surname Dessarthe, with the parents recorded as Georgina Ellen Dessarthe and her husband Francois.
I have not uncovered the full picture yet, but it appears the Dessarthes were fostering children . Arthur and Rose Ethel would have lived in the same house together , and attended school under the same surname .
I couldn't begin to speculate on what the foster parents told them as to their biological parents.
