Biography

Alexander Oakes Parker wed Martha D. Snow on February 18, 1829 in Campbell, Virginia. There is an alternate record showing January 12, 1829 as the wedding date, with the only parent noted Polly(Mary) Snow, Martha's mother.

Per FamilySearch profiles for the couple, Martha and spouse Alexander Parker both died in 1840, and had at least one child, Sallie A. Parker. Evidence cited here shows estimate for Alexander Oakes Parker's death to be good, but that Martha lived beyond 1860.

The 1830 census of Bedford, Virginia estimates birth years as 1790-1800 for Alexander, and 1800-1810 for spouse. A young girl is noted in the home as under 5 years old.

Marriage record of 1839 shows daughter Sallie Parker wed John H. Bennett on June 11. John's parents listed as Abner and Ann C. Bennett.

The 1840 census of Bedford reinforces estimate that Alexander Parker died around that time, and shows likelyhood Alexander and Martha Parker had additional children. The 1830 census had showed neighbors Andrew and Richard Goad on the same page as Alexander. In the 1840 record, Martha Parker is shown as head of house; Andrew and Richard Goad again on same page of census, so obviously our Martha here.

Further in 1840 record, it is shown that in Martha's home are four boys under 10, three girls under 10, a man 20-30, and two women: one 30-40(1800-1810), and one 40-50(1790-1800).

In the 1850 record for Bedford, evidence Alexander and Martha had children other than Sallie; Martha(est 1810) is shown with three children:

  1. Tabitha Parker 1832
  2. Joseph H 1836
  3. Sarah A. Parker 1838

The 1860 census shows 3 of 4 individuals from 1840, with initials: M Parker 1806, JA Parker 1836, SA Parker 1839.

Interestingly, three of Alexander Oakes Parker's siblings married members of the Snow family of Pittsylvania: Frances, Eli, and Mary.
