Research Notes

The archipelago has 19500 inhabitants and its capital is Kirkwall. The islands have been inhabited since ancient times and were conquered in the ninth century by Norwegian Vikings, who established an empire there, which with some interruptions lasted until 1472, when the islands went to Scotland. The population spoke Norwegian until the 17th century[2]
