extracted from the 1885 Half-Breed North West Territory scrip applications. Question 25 asked: Where were you living and what were you doing on March 15, 1885? The question was designed to discover what they were doing during the North West Territory Rebellion.
ALARY, Angelique nee Parisien, for Philomene ALARY, her deceased daughter; #1003; Address: Wood Mountain. Lived: I left there last March, have been with hunting. I was at Milk River when Commission was at Willow Bunch. Had poor winter then. I lived at St.Michaels from the fall of the year of the rebellion for six years and then returned to Wood Mountain where I had been living before. Relationship: Mother. Scrip: Both {parents} Wpg. Born: Cypress Hills, Twenty-two years. Lived with parents. Father: Pierre ALARY (HB) > Antoine ALARY - Angelique CAPLETTE; Mother: I am mother (HB) > Bonaventure PARISIEN - Marguerite ___; Died: Wood Mountain when three years old. Legal representatives: myself, .00; Pierre ALARY (23) Wood Mountain, .00; Caroline wife of J. Bte PELLETIER (42) Maple Creek, .00; Joseph ALARY (40) Wood Mountain, .00; Flavie wife of Michel DAVIS (38) Alciede, ND, here, .00; Marie Jane wife of Alexander BIRSTON (26) Wood Mtn, here, .00. {no signature} 21st August 1901.
Declaration: Alexis L'ESPERANCE of St.Norbert in the Province of Manitoba being duly sworn saith: I have known the claimant Angelique ALARY nee PARISIEN from at least the year 1855, as well as her late husband Pierre ALARY. We were neighbors at St.Boniface. They left there in 1868 or 1869 for Edmonton, and remained there up to the year 1871, and remained in the North west Territories principally in Wood Mountain, Cypress Hills and Qu'Appelle country until after the rebellion of 1885. I verily believe that her husband was a scout under Jean Louis LEGARE in that year. During the time I say they lived in the Territories they made trips pretty regularly to Fort Garry to dispose of their furs and pemmican and procure supplies; but their home was in the territories. In 1868 they sold their property at St.Boniface to my brother. The family is now broken up, some living in the Territories and some on the other side. The claimant herself has whatever home she has at Wood Mountain. Alex. L'ESPERANCE, 21 Aug 1901.
Alexis L'ESPERANCE asked to be heard again and he said: I unintentionally went too far in the literal statement that this family remained in the North-west from the time they left Edmonton until after rebellion of 1885. I wish to make it clear that while they spent most of their time in the Canadian plains, they crossed frequently into the United States hunting game and picking bones. But the family regarded Canada as their home and the father was with Jean Louis LEGARE's scouts. Alex L'ESPERANC
Declaration: Caroline PELLETIER nee ALARY of Cypress Hills Assiniboia being deaf sworn saith: I am the oldest child of Pierre ALARY deceased and his wife Angelique PARISIEN. I remember the birth of my deceased sister Philomene. She was born at Cypress Hills on the 15th March about twenty-two years ago. We were hunting at the time. Caroline PELLETIER (x); 21 August 1901.
