Biography

Story from Parker Reunion Booklet 1995 by Alan Parker but was originally taken from research by either W L Andrews of Ozark, Dale County, or a granddaughter of Henry Z. Parker, Lois Yelverton, or both.

Lemuel Parker acquired a most liberal education in his native state, having gone to college. He taught school for a number of years and also engaged in farming. He was very devout and sober minded, and only read such books as the Holy Bible and "Pilgrims Progress", having read the former through nine times. Lemuel served in the Indian Uprising of 1818 and is said to have refrained from ever owning slaves. In 1819, Lemuel Parker married Elizabeth Carpenter of Anson County, (North Carolina), daughter of William, Sr. and Susan (Allen...inserted by Kathy Jo Bryant)Carpenter. Elizabeth was born on July 9, 1799. Lemuel's younger brother, Israel, was married to Elizabeth's younger sister, Catherine Carpenter. After moving to Dale County, Alabama in 1851, Lemuel and Elizabeth Parker acquired 400 acres of land near the confluence of Big Claybank and Bear Creeks, located in Township 5, Range 23, Section 11. Lemuel purchased this acreage from Burt Byrd and lived there almost four years when he sold it and purchased the John R. Matthews place, where he lived the rest of his life. About four years before his death, he became paralyzed and it became necessary for his youngest son, Joseph, who was then eleven years old, to feed him with a spoon. He died on March 10, 1856. Elizabeth died on November 15, 1870, while living at the home of her son Lemuel, Jr., before he moved to Sweetwater, Texas. Both are buried in Old Hopeful Cemetery near Ozark, Dale County, Alabama.
