The fourth of 12 children of Charles Parker and Elizabeth Whitbread, Maud was born on 11th June 1878 in Barnard Street, North Adelaide, South Australia.[1]
By the time Maud was six years old, her parents had moved to Crystal Brook West, where her father took up farming.
John Engstrom, a Swedish immigrant, was a farmer who owned a nearby property. On 27th March 1901 Maud and John were married in the Methodist Church at Crystal Brook West.[2] They had seven children:

Maud died at the age of 57, due to months of valvular heart disease, followed by heart block.[3] Her daughters Sylvia and Avis died in infancy due to heart failure, Avis being just nine weeks of age. Her sons Jack, Clive and Ross also had cardiac disease in middle age, which eventually caused their deaths. Maud was interred in the Port Pirie Cemetery.[4]
