Biography

Henry was the son of Thomas Parker and Susanna Budgell of Somerset. He was baptised at Chilthorne Domer on January 5 1834.

Henry arrived at Wellington with his family in 1841 on the ship Gertrude landing at Port Nicholson, Wellington.

Thomas Parker settled the family at the Hutt where he was later awarded 50 acres by the Provincial Government. In 1846, he was among a number of settlers who were given financial aid by the government after being driven from their homes by the insurgent natives. Thomas passed away in 1897.

Henry married in 1856 at St Paul's, Wellington to Eleanor Hannah Aston, daughter of Thomas Valentine Aston and Elizabeth Robinson. Ten children were born during their marriage. Their youngest daughter, Matilda, was to die before her first birthday in 1875.

Henry and Eleanor set up an umbrella making business in Wellington and later advertisements in the Evening Post suggest that only Eleanor was involved in the business.

Eleanor Parker predeceased Henry and passed away in 1894 aged 60.

Henry died in 1915 and is buried at Karori Cemetery.
