Biography

[1]John PARKER [Parents] was born Sep 25 1740 in Lewes, Sussex, Delaware. He died Mar 03 1793 in Hancock Co., Georgia. John married Sarah GORDY on Jun 03 1760 in Sussex Co., Delaware.

Served in the Revolutionary War

On 10 July 1784 - The Governor of Georgia signed Land Grants to Revolutionary soldiers, John Parker was included in the group. He claimed the 287 1/2 acres in Georgia, bounded SW by the Oconee River, and the SE by the land of Charles Curtis. The lands on the other sides were vacant. On 26 September 1784, John Parker registered the land in Georgia. The lands were taken from Indian Lands, in 1786, land was taken from Washington County and added to Oglethorpe and Wilkes Counties to form Greene County. In 1793, land was again taken from Washington County and Greene County to form Hancock County. John is shown owning land in these counties and that he livedthere from 1784 to 1793. Land records show that the Parker's owned propertiesin several states before moving to Georgia, such as Delaware, Virginia, and Maryland. Therefore, after the state lines were defined, Sussex County in Delaware, Dorcester in Maryland, and Accomac in Virginia, each possessed their own records. This is the reason that John Parker is listed on the tax lists, land records, and possibly the reason also that he is listed as having served in several states in the war. Book N of Dorcester County, Maryland, shows that John and his wife, Sarah Gordy, deeded land to Nathan Gordy, possibly her brother, in August of 1789. It is fairly safe to assume John left the State of Maryland with his family to have arrived in Georgia by September of 1784. Bible records show that John died on 3 March 1793. His will, written 18 February 1793, was probated 16 May 1794. Two witnesses, Leonard Gordy and George Ross, appeared and testified, and the will was recorded on the records of Hancock County, GA., on that date. Sarah Gordy Parker says she was a resident of Hancock Cty., in 1793. Her death as stated in the Family Bible is 28 September 1825. This has been erroneously been given as the date of John's death, who had diedover 32 years previously. John and Sarah's descendents owned and occupied land in Greene, Hancock, and Washington Counties for many years following their deaths. The Parker's participated in land sales in Milledgeville, GA in 1817-1819. They bought land in what is now Escambia County, AL. They settled in what was known as the Roberts Community. The community was located just east of what is the town of Brewton, the county seat of Escambia. The Coneuch River was their link with the rest of the country. At the time of their migrationto Alabama, the land they bought was occupied by Indians. It was a hand to mouth existence, they cleared land and built homes from logs culled from the forests around there. The Parker's returned to Georgia after only five years, but after staying there for two years, returned to Alabama to again eke a living out the land. _______________________________________________________________ Service record of John Parker during Revolutionary War:
