Peter was born in Hertford County, North Carolina about 1770. He married Jemina (also seen spelled as Jemima in the census) Hasty around 1795. He moved to Anson County before 1810 as he is listed in the Anson County 1810 Census. The area of Anson County he lived in became Union County and he is listed there with his wife in the 1850 Census. He left a will dated September 22, 1851 in Union County. According to his obituary in the North Carolina Argus, he passed away April 28, 1860. In his will, he did not name his wife so she is presumed to have died. He named the following children:
