John was born in 1758. According to Mr. Rose's research, he "served as a private in Captain Buller Claiborn's company, a part of the Second Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Alexander Spotswood. His name first appears on the company payroll May 1777. He was transferred in July 1777 to the company of Captain Wood Jones and Captain Benjamin Hoome's Company the company formerly commanded by Captain Nickolas. He was transferred in August 1778 to Captain Alexander Parker's Company. He name appears last on the company payroll for April 1779. Several descendants have joined the DAR on his patriotic services (See National numbers 22562-216463, and 190, 073. See also DAR National Magazine of May 1949, p. 427. A record of him and his descendants is in possession of the Fuqua family. The source supplies the lists of his marriage and his children.He lived a remarkably long life, being ninety-eight at the time of his death. He married Nancy Wood in Halifax County, Virginia on September 29, 1794. He was thirty-six at the time. He married Eleanor Tipton in Tennessee in 1815. He had eighteen children, and was eighty-two when his last child was born."
