  • A genealogy of the Nye family, Volume 1 #115

Dea. Silvanus 4 Nye (Joseph 3, Jonathan 2, Benjamin 1) (pp. 108/9). Vol. I gives the date of his will, 8 July 1820, proved 14 November 1820, but not the date of death. The Sandwich Church Records, however, show: "Dea. Silvanus Nye, drowned 27 August 1820." Vol. I says of his wife only that "his will . gives his wife's name as Rebecca." But Sandwich Town Records shows the marriage 6 February 1786 of Silvanus Nye to Rebecca Parker. This was Rebecca 4 Parker, born Barnstable 31 August 1747, a daughter of Samuel 3 and Desire 5 (Freeman) Parker, through whom des- cendants can trace back to John Rowland the Mayflower passenger. The will, dated 1 March 1766 of Samuel 3 Parker of Barnstable gives L20. to Rebecca, one of his five unmarried daughters. The will, dated 2 Decem- ber 1777 of her widowed mother Desire (Freeman) Parker gives: . . "to my daughter Rebecca Nye, my negro girl called B ashua and 24 Spanish Milled dollars for her to purchase a silver cane with, together with the household goods I gave her in my lifetime. " The will dated 19 December 1799 of her maiden sister Hannah 4 Parker of Barnstable gives "to my sis- ter Rebecca Nye" a share of her wearing apparel, jewelry and residuary estate, (see this writer's article "Robert Parker of Barnstable," the N. E. (pg 28) H. G. Register - January 1959 - 113:18/21). This Rebecca Parker was ad- mitted to the Sandwich Church 18 August 1771. The baptisms of the child- ren of "Silvanus and Rebecca Nye" also appear on the Church Records:

  1. 364 Lydia, baptized 16 March 1777; #365 Silvanus, baptized 25 April 1779

(for some reason Vol. I says this child was "baptized at Harwich (see page 194); #365 Desire, baptized 31 March 1782; #367 Joseph, baptized (not re- corded in Sandwich, - Vol. I says he was born in Harwich also, and perhaps baptized there); #368 Rebecca, baptized 15 June 1788; #369 Samuel, bap- tized 7 March 1790. Dea. Silvanus Nye in Sandwich 1790 Census with a family of 1 male over 16; 3 under 16; 4 females and two other persons, probably servants.

Birth info does not match the biography. While possible, a fellow who lived to 26 having 3 children seems a bit of a stretch, even for that era. If in fact he lived to 62, then I would be looking for more children.
