Agnes Parr was the daughter of Thomas Parr, Knt., and Alice Tunstall.[1][2][3] Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated to be about the same year her husband was born. She may have been born at Kirkby-Kendal, Westmorland where her father held lands.
Agnes married Thomas Strickland, Knt.,[4] of Sizergh, Westmorland.[3] Thomas, born 1443, was the son and heir of Walter Strickland, Esq., and Douce de Croft.[1] The couple was married by 1464/5[1] as evidenced by a grant signed 3 December 1465 by Thomas' father, Walter, giving the manor of Wynder in Westmorland to Thomas' wife Agnes.[5] They had three sons and one daughter:
Walter, K.B., died September 1506, married Elizabeth Pennington and had issue[1]
Thomas (clerk),[1] who was mentioned in 1489 and 1494 land transactions[5][6]
Joan, wife of Thomas Middleton,[1] received dispensation to marry in 1476/7[5]
Between 1481 and 1483, Dame Agnes is named in deeds with her husband in transactions with Gilbert de Lancaster and his wife Elizabeth. Scott in Stricklands of Sizergh Castle speculates that Elizabeth may have been one of Agnes' sisters.[5]
Agnes' date and place of death are unknown. She predeceased her husband who remarried to Margaret Fouleshurst, widow of Sir John Byron,[1] before 9 March 1491, when Margaret's dower was settled.[5] Thomas died in 1497.[1]
Research Notes
Parents
Researchers seem to differ on theories regarding the identity of the father of Agnes, who married Thomas Strickland. Richardson and MS pedigrees put forth Thomas Parr,[1][3] while others state he may have been Thomas' son, Sir William Parr,[7] son of Elizabeth FitzHugh.[5][8]
