Note

He was the first judge of the County Court of Hampshire County in 1698, and held the office more than twenty-three years. He was often a selectman; he was elected a Representative to the General Court at Boston many times, the last time when he was in his seventy-fourth year. He served on important committees. His large interests extended over a wide territory. He owned both saw mills and grist mills at Northampton and Deerfield ; and was largely interested in the iron business in Suffield, and Southfield. He was one of the earliest lawyers of Western Massachusetts, and also fought in King Philip's War.
Joseph Parsons(Joseph 1), son of Joseph Parsons, and Mary Bliss was born November 1, 1647 at Springfield, MA and died at Northhampton MA, November, 1729.
Joseph Parsons, Esquire; as his name appears in the public records, and as it may still be seen on his tombstone in the Northhampton Cemetary with that of his wife.
During his life span of eighty-two years he was a public man in affairs of church and state. For some years he was Justice of the Peace under the old English form, with the rights and duties and was said to have been the last of the kind in New England.
In 1711 he was commissioned by Governor Dudley as a Captain of a Foot Company in the Hampshire regiment commanded by a Colonel Partridge, and was active in the military service of the colony. In civil life he was quite often a selectman of the town, and he was also for more than twenty-three years a Judge of the County Court. He was elected representative of the General Court at Boston many times, the last being in his seventy-seventh year and often served on important committees.
As illustrative of the times it is of record that, serving on a committee to manage the funeral of Joseph Sheldon, a member of the General Court from Sheffield, he audited among other bills, one for twelve shillings for a coffin and two pounds and fifteen shillings for wine.
The interests of Joseph Parsons, Esquire; extended over a territory of mass proportions. He was owner of both a gristmill and a sawmill at Northhampton and Deerfield, and wasinterested in the iron business at Suffield and at Southfield. He was first commissioned Judge of Hampshire County Courts, October 16, 1696. On the petition of Joseph Parsons and others of Hampshire County, the General Court granted seven miles square on the Housatonic River, in what is now the town of Sheffield.
Records of the New Hampshire Society of Colonial Wars show that he served in King Phillip's War, was one of the earliest lawyers in Western Massachusetts, he was a Judge of the Hampshire County Court for twenty-three years, and was a Deputy to the General Court for fourteen years, twelve from Northhampton and two from Springfield.
Joseph Parsons, Esq. married March 17, 1669, Elizabeth, daughter of Elder John and Abigail(Ford) Strong, the progenitor of the Strong Family of America and the ancestor of Governor Caleb Strong. Elizabeth was born at Windsor, Connecticut, February 29, 1648 and died at Northhampton May 11, 1737.
