Lewis County, Virginia (now West Virginia) was the parent county of the following present-day West Virginia counties: Barbour, Braxton, Doddridge, Gilmer, Ritchie and Upshur. Isaac was probably born in that part of Lewis County which became Gilmer County in 1845 and West Virginia in 1863.
