Biography

John was born after 1782. He was the son of William Parsons and Mary Graves.

John's father, the Rev. William Parsons, inherited Canon Frome at the death of his maternal cousin, Richard Hopton in 1810. John was training for the church and had married Grace Ann daughter of John Williams in 1807. His father William (who had also inherited the Parsons family estate at Kemerton) contracted with son for John to become owner of Canon Frome in exchange for an annual payment by John to his step mother Ann (Poole) Parsons, sister of Edward Poole of Homend. The two estates share a border.

Canon Frome has its own Estate Church, St James where John became Vicar and where he remained until his death. He was followed as Vicar by the Rev. Michael Hopton son of the second Rev. William Parsons Hopton, the Rev. John Hopton's 1/2 brother. There is a fine stained glass widow of the Rev. John shown in his cassock and set just to the left of the St James Church door.

John's oldest son Capt. John Parsons inherited the Canon Frome estate as the last male descendant, followed by Capt. John's daughter and grand daughter. The estate was sold in 1951 to Herefordshire Council for use as a school. The house, rebuilt by Richard Hopton, is Listed Grade II like it's neighbor, Homend, still owned by the Poole family when John died in 1870.
