Biography

Joseph is the son of William Parsons who arrived on the eastern shore of Maryland about 1725. This Parsons family moved to Rockingham or Augusta County, Virginia about 1763 then settled in what is now Lewis County about 1776.

Joseph served as an Indian Fighter/Spy during the American Revolution. He married 1) Matilda Motts and removed to Jackson County, Virginia with his older brother, Charles, about 1800. Among the children of Joseph and Matilda are:

  • Adam, m. Susannah Greathouse
  • George, m. Edith Hughes on 21 Aug 1831
  • Charles, m. Anna
  • Joseph
  • William, m. Elizabeth Freeland on 27 Sep 1817
  • John, m. Sally Miller on 23 Jan 1820

Joseph was a prominent church leader and allowed Rev. William Steel to hold services in his home as the Reverend circuited the Kanawha Valley.

Joseph married 2) Elizabeth Bush, daughter of Adam Bush, on 14 Jan 1804.
