Biography

Samuel Parsons was born on 23 Jan 1652/3 (1653 based on current dating system) in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony, son of Cornet Joseph Parsons (1620 - 1683) and Mary (Bliss) Parsons (~1626 - 1712).[1]

Family

Married first, Elizabeth Cook(e) (daughter of Capt. Aaron Cook and his second wife, Joanna Denslow) about 1677 at Northampton. Their children were:

  1. Samuel Parsons, born 24 Nov 1678, died by 1680.
  2. Samuel, born 6 Jul 1680, d. 8 May 1683.
  3. Aaron, born ca. 1682; killed at Springfield, Mass., 26 July 1708.
  4. Elizabeth Parsons, born April 1684; married Thomas Lyman on 25 Dec 1706.
  5. Samuel, born ca. 1688 (mentioned [deceased] in father's will, 1624); m. 15 Dec. 1711, Mary Wheeler; their only known child, John (b. 12 June 1713), named a legatee in will of his grandfather Parsons; Samuel apparently died between 1712 and ca. 1715.

Elizabeth died 2 Sep 1690, and Samuel married second, Rhoda Taylor, daughter of Thankful (Woodward) and Capt. John Taylor, about 1691 at Northampton. Their children were:

  1. Jemima Parsons, born 24 Nov 1691; married Hezekiah Talcott; died 2 Feb 1757.
  2. Rhoda Parsons, born 4 Feb 1694 at Northampton.
  3. Timothy Parsons, born 23 Jan 1695/6 at Northampton.
  4. Hannah Parsons, born 18 Jul 1699 at Northampton; married 22 Dec. 1715, John Coe.
  5. Simeon Parsons, born 16 Sep 1701 at Northampton.
  6. Phineas Parsons, born 31 Mar 1704 at Northampton; died 6 May 1724.
  7. Ithamar Parsons, born 9 Jun 1707 at Northampton; died 21 Jan. 1786.
  8. Aaron Parsons, born 3 Sep 1711, at Durham, Middlesex, Connecticut; m. 6 Feb. 1732/3, Abigail Sanford of Milford.

Samuel died in 1734. Rhoda died in 1759 (possibly in 1711).

Research Notes

  1. Did Samuel marry a third time? Descendants of Cornet Joseph Parsons says that Rhoda died and Samuel married third, Mary Wheeler in 1711. Other sources say that the Samuel Parsons who married Mary Wheeler on 15 Dec 1711 may have been a different Samuel - a son or other relative. From transcription of Barbour Collection: "Samuel, uncle of Moses Parsons, removed from Northampton, Mass., to Durham about 1710; m Mary Wheeler of Durham, Dec 15, 1711, by Rev Nathaniel Chauncey."
  2. Which Samuel Parsons died 8 May 1683? Descendants of Cornet Joseph Parsons says it was his first son Samuel. If that was the case, why did he and Elizabeth name another son Samuel in 1680?
