Biography

Elizabeth Partridge was born in Swimbridge, about 4 miles from Barnstaple, Devonshire, in 1576, and christened there at St. James' Church on 22 Oct 1576.[1] She was the daughter of Bartholomew Partridge of Swimbridge, Devon.

On 8 Feb 1607 in Landkey (a village two miles north-west of her birthplace of Swimbridge) Elizabeth married John Maye.[2]

Research has failed to reveal records in or around Swimbridge for any of the children of Elizabeth & John (many births / marriages / deaths of those times were never recorded, or records were lost).

However, there are two records for the death of an Elizabeth Maye in Swimbridge, relating to burials on 20 Jan 1641 and 17 Nov 1661. The former is currently believed to be the more likely record of Elizabeth's death.[3]

  2. England Births & Baptisms 1538-1975 / Landkey, Devonshire, England - 8 Feb 1607 marriage of John Maye and Elizabeth Partridge (note: source specifically says "John Maye", not William Mayes or Mease. There are two or possibly three candidates of the name John Maye or May, born in Swimbridge around those dates and of suitable maritable age to have been Elizabeth's husband.)

Hi Carole, Karen;

I've now researched in detail, and can now confirm that THIS Elizabeth Partridge did not marry William Mayes / Mease; and she never emigrated to Virginia. She married a John Maye - also born in Swimbridge, Devon - on 8 Feb 1607 in Landkey, Devon - a village 2 miles north-west of Swimbridge., and appears to have lived and died in Devon.

So unless you have a problem here, I will correct the links and references to reflect the new information.

That leaves us with an interesting challenge - who actually was the first wife of William Mayes / Mease of London, who emigrated to Virginia? I'm in UK, and cannot easily access any reliable records referring to the 1609 and 1610 migrations to Virginia which give details of the passenger list. Can you?

Hi Carole & Karen,

I've been doing further research on the early Partridges, and am now certain that Parnell Green DID NOT marry Bartholomew Partridge (Partridge-2798) of Swimbridge, Devon; she married Bartholomew Partridge (Partridge-114) of Navestock, Essex which was her own home town. That family later appear to have lived in London, where Bartholomew was a haberdasher.

I have therefore removed Parnell Green as this Elizabeth's mother. As yet, I do not know the name of her mother, but will investigate further.

Hi Carole and Karen, I've found a record of a christening for Elizabeth Partridge on family search. I've added it here with the link. I hope it helps in some way. Katrina
Partridge-114 and Partridge-1199 appear to represent the same person because: Not much information on Partridge-114, but birth info matches.

Removed Anne Amyas Blake as Elizabeth's mother. No evidence for connection.

Partridge-242 and Partridge-1199 are not ready to be merged because: Partridge-114 has a lower ID number. They should both be merged into that profile.

Partridge-1199 and Partridge-242 (now Partridge-114) appear to represent the same person because: I had set these two as an unmerged match because there was a question about mothers. I can't find any evidence that Jasper and Anne Amyas Blake were Elizabeth's parents, so I removed them. Same name and birth info.
