Biography

Parentage

Sarah, the wife of Samuel Allen, was the daughter of George Partridge and Sarah (Tracy) Partridge of Duxbury. Her parentage is established by (1) a 1680 deed by George Partridge to his son John Partridge of a 50-acre lot in Bridgewater on the westerly side of the 50-acre lot of Samuel Allen, which "he had of me George Partridge his father-in-law,"[1] (2) George Partridge's 1682 will, which contains a bequest to his granddaughter Bethiah Allen,[2][3] and (3) the 1702 will of George Partridge's widow Sarah which refers to her daughter "Sarah Allien."[3]

Date of Birth

Sarah's date of birth is uncertain, although there appears to be a consensus among secondary sources that she was born in or about 1639. The Partridge Genealogy states that she was born 1639,[4] while Anderson states that she was born "say 1639."[5] No evidence has been found that establishes a specific date of birth. A date of birth of 1639 seems reasonable based on (1) a Plymouth Colony record showing her parents were married in November 1638, (2) the will of her mother Sarah Partridge, which lists her first among her daughters, suggesting that she was George and Sarah Partridge's eldest child,[3] and (3) a Bridgewater town record showing that the eldest child of Samuel Allen (and presumably Sarah) was born in December 1660.[6]

A number of family trees state that she was born on September 2, 1639, but no reliable evidence has been found to support that proposition.

Place of Birth

Based on evidence establishing that her parents were residents of Duxbury at the estimated date of her birth (1639), it is highly likely (but uncertain) that Sarah was born there.[7]

Marriage

Sarah married Samuel Allen.[8][9][5] Their marriage is confirmed by a 1680 deed by George Partridge to his son John Partridge of a 50-acre lot in Bridgewater on the westerly side of the 50-acre lot of Samuel Allen, which "he had of me George Partridge his father-in-law"[1] and is further supported by George Partridge's 1682 will, which contains a bequest to his granddaughter Bethiah Allen[2][3] and the 1702 will of George Partridge's widow Sarah which refers to her daughter "Sarah Allien."[3]

The date of Sarah and Samuel's marriage is uncertain. Savage states that they were married about 1658;[9] Partridge[4] and Vinton[10] state that they were married in 1658; while Anderson just states that they were married by 1660.[5] All estimates of their date of marriage appear to be based on the date of birth of their children. The first child whose identity is known is Samuel Jr., who was born on December 4, 1660. However, the Bridgewater town records of the births of Samuel's children state that Samuel was the "second borne" of Samuel Allen senior, without identifying the older child.[11][12] Based on a typical two-year gap in births, Samuel and Sarah's first child was probably born in late 1658 or early 1659. Thus, the estimates of a marriage in about 1658 seem reasonable.

The location of Sarah and Samuel's marriage is also uncertain. Based on the residency of Sarah's parents in Duxbury at the probable time of their marriage and the fact that, after their marriage, they resided in Bridgewater, they were probably married in Duxbury or Bridgewater, with the former being somewhat more likely of the two.

Children

Sarah and Samuel had the following children, all except Mehetabel born in Bridgewater:

  1. an unidentified child, b. say early 1659, presumably died young[13]
  2. Samuel, b. December 4, 1660,[11][12][6][8] m. December 2, 1685 Rebeckah Cary in Bridgewater,[14][8] d. 1736[8]
  3. Essiel/Elliel, b. March 1, 1662/3,[11][12][15][8] living but unmarried in June 1703 (based on a bequest by Samuel to daughter Elliel Allen)
  4. Mehitabel, b. January 20, 1664/5 "in Duxborugh,"[11][12][16][8] m. December 2, 1685 Isaac Alden in Bridgewater[17][8]
  5. Sarah, b. April 14, 1667, m. 1st about 1687 Jonathan Cary in Bridgewater, m. 2d October 25, 1705 Benjamin Snow in Bridgewater, d. after September 1738 in Bridgewater (for sources, see Sarah's profile)
  6. Bethiah, b. May 12, 1669,[11][12][15][8] m. John Pryor[8]
  7. Nathaniel, b. February 10, 1672/3,[11][12][16][8] m. 1st December 14, 1696 Bethiah Conant in Bridgewater,[14][8] m. 2d Abigail ______[8]
  8. Ebenezer, b. October 14, 1674,[11][12][15][8] m. October 11, 1698 Rebeckah Scate in Bridgewater[18][8]
  9. Josiah, b. April 21, 1677,[11][12][19][8] m. December 25, 1707 Mary Read in Bridgewater[17][8]
  10. Elisha/Elishah, b. February 8, 1678/9,[11][12][15][8] m. December 3, 1701 Mehitabel Byram in Bridgewater[18][8]
  11. Nehemiah, b. January 5, 1680/1,[11][12][16][8] m. January 3, 1706/7 Sarah Wormel in Bridgewater[14][8]

Death

Sarah was named as executrix of her husband June 8, 1703 will.[20] She therefore died sometime after that date. Many family trees state that she died on October 20, 1717. However, no reliable evidence has been found to support that proposition.

In 1749, Sarah(deceased) and her known heirs and/or their attorneys are mentioned in her brother, James Partridge's estate account.[21]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

To hopefully answer Bryan's question, Bethiah (daughter of Deacon Samuel of Braintree and wife Sarah) was mentioned in the will of her grandfather George Partridge. In addition Sarah's younger sister Elizabeth married Deacon Samuel's younger brother James, as proved by Sarah's mother's will.

Which Samuel Allen born in the 1630's? Son of George Allen or son of Samuel Allen?

We are very interested in sourcing that would tie Sarah Partridge to one or the other of these Samuels, So far, we have been unable to find such.

Update 6/2018: To answer my own question, it appears that BOTH Samuels were born in the 1630's, and in fact both likely around 1632 or 1633.

Partridge-358 and Partridge-51 appear to represent the same person because: The Partridge-358 profile was created as part of an ancestry.com gedcom import that identified Sarah Partridge as the wife of Samuel Allen, born 1660, and the mother of Mehitabel Allen Alden, born 1664. There is an obvious issue with those dates, and Sarah Partridge is widely documented to have been the wife of Samuel Allen born in the 1630s and the mother of several children, including Mehitable Allen Alden born 1664. I have changed the parents of Mehitabel Allen Alden to correspond to this information.
