John Patch was born in about 1699 in Ipswich, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was the son of [Patch-217|James Patch]].[1]
John Patch and Abigail Bowles (or Bowels) published their intention to marry in Ipswich on 9 Oct 1720, and were married in the Hamlet Parish Church before the end of that year.[2] Abigail was the widow of John Bowles, Esq.[3] There is no record in Ipswich of Abigail's death, but a John Patch and Mercy Potter (or, Hanna Tomson, according to the published Intention) were married at the Hamlet Parish Church on 18 Oct 1721.[4] When John died in 1775, his will gave his wife's name as "Massa" and indicated that one of his sons (Edmund) had received a legacy from his grandfather Potter. So, either the marriage record for Abigail Bowles referred to a different John Patch or she died before October of 1721.
John may have had eleven children.[5] Since he apparently had his oldest three sons baptized on the same day, and then his oldest daughter, Marcy, baptized about three weeks later, this list may well not reflect the children's actual birth order. Further, because of the possibility that there was another John Patch fathering children in Ipswich at this time, it is possible that some of the children listed were not part of this family. See below, under "Probate" for the list of his children in his will.
Edmund Patch (bp. 3 Mar 1727/8, Hamlet Parish Church)[6]
James Patch (bp. 3 Mar 1727/8, Hamlet Parish Church)[7]
John Patch died in Ipswich at the age of 76, on 30 May 1775.[17]
Probate
In his Last Will and Testament, dated 5 Jan 1775,[18] John Patch named the following heirs:
Massa, his wife
John, his son
James, his son
Nathan, his son
Edmund, his son (who had been left a legacy in his grandfather Potter's will)
Andrew, his son (who was to receive &pounnd;6 annually and a cow, unless he made demands for more, in which case he would receive only 10 shillings)
Massa Patch, his daughter
Mary Brown, his daughter
Anna Porter, his daughter
He also stipulated that his three sons (John, James and Nathan) decently support his "negro servant Flora." Finally, he named John, James and Nathan as joint executors.
In accordance with his will, John's sons, John Patch (a yeoman of Ipswich), Nathan Patch (a yeoman of Worcester in Worcester County), Elisha Whitney (a physician of Ipswich), and George Adams (an innholder of Ipswich) signed the Administration Bond for John Patch's estate on 13 Jun 1775.[19]
Research Notes
It needs to be noted that there are, in the Ipswich Vital Records, children born to a "John Patch, Jr.," starting with Abigail, baptized at the Hamlet Parish Church on 6 May 1722.[20] The present John Patch was, at different times, called "John," John, Jr.," and "John, Sr." in the Ipswich Vital Records. There may very well be at least one other John Patch who fathered children in Ipswich in the 1720s and early 1730s.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
