Donald's early life is yet unknown, he was from Inverness, Scotland and migrated to Australia perhaps as a crew member aboard a ship. Donald worked as a sailmaker and shipwright in the 1860s and 1870s in Melbourne and then as a grocer (1875)[1] He had a child with Mary (Whittaker) Paterson an older and married woman in1861, they later married in 1867 and lived at 32 Market Street South Melbourne. Donald died on 12 Jun 1897[2]
