Early Life

John Paterson was born in 1604, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the son Alexander Paterson, minister of Logie Durno,1592-1620.[1][2][3]

Education and Ministry

He attended King's College, University of Aberdeen, and graduated as MA in 1624. [4]

Marriage and Children

John married Elizabeth Ramsay between 1627 and 1632.[5] They had 6 sons and 1 daugther [6]

  • Robert Paterson b. after 1632 d. 1717; regent 1667, and Principal of Marischal College, University of Aberdeen 21 Nov 1678 - 1679; ejected for Jacobitism.[12]
  • William Paterson b. about 1632 d. 29 Sep 1709; [13] Advocate Regent of Philosophy University of Edinburgh; [5] [14] later, Sir William, 1st Baronet of Eccles 2 Jul 1687. [6][15]
  • Isabella Paterson b. after 1632; Isabella married Major Kenneth Mackenzie of Suddie, Clan Mackenzie, who was killed in the Battle of Mulroy, Lockaber, Scotland, i 1688.[16]They married before 1680 as a daughter, Mary, was born on 20 Apr 1680.[17]

In 1632 John was appointed to the church at Foveran, Aberdeenshire, but when the National Covenant of 1638 emerged, John refused to sign, causing a hiatus in his service to his congregation at Foveran, and only returned, restored to his ministry, in July of the following year, after recanting before the general assembly in the form of a sermon.[6] In 1649 John left Foveran for the ministry of Ellon in Aberdeenshire in 1649. John's apppointment as Bishop of Ross came on 7 May 1662; he was consecrated at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, Scotland, and remained in office until 1679, the year of his death.[6]

John Paterson, Bishop of Ross, died on 9 Jan 1679 in Dyke, Morayshire, Scotland [18]

Research Notes

George Paterson and an explanation of the role of Commissary: "OF ECCLESIASTICAL COURTS Every bishop has under him an official, or commissary, who is the judge of the spiritual-court within the diocese. Unto this court are referred matters of testaments, bastardy, divorce, tithes, perjury, etc, and many civil cases." [19]

Children of John Paterson: Date of marriage to Elizabeth is an estimate; no record available on either Family Search or Scotland's People websites. Regarding reliable sources for the birth and death records of all of John Paterson's children, there is a distinct lack of information; "Scotland's People", "Family Search" and Google have all been addressed and, as far as I can see, family tree supervisors have not cited sources for births or deaths. There have been some disagreements as to each child's position in the family, and even the number of children born, but I have opted for what I consider the most reliable sources and cited them.

Sir William Paterson, Baronet; in the second citation for his baronetcy his son, John, is referred to as 2nd Baron of Eccles, and his grandson, also John, as the 3rd Baron of Eccles
