Biography

Jane Paterson was born 25 August 1825 in Wades, Northumberland and was Christened on 12 September 1825 at Wooler, Northumberland. Her parents were Peter Paterson and Janet Stewart. It should be noted that on the Baptismal record her mother is listed as "Jane" with no maiden name given[1]

Jane went on to marry Thomas Geggie. The couple married on 16 October 1847 at Lamberton Toll, Lamberton, Berwickshire. [2] Please see research notes below on how to obtain the source for this information

The spelling of Geggie changes with different records which is presumably down to illiteracy. On the marriage record Thomas' name is given as Geggy[2] however his headstone has Geggie[3]. Geggie is the most common spelling of the family name.

Jane and her husband Thomas had 10 children together:

  1. Robert Geggie b. 1848 d. 1873
  2. Peter Paterson Geggie b. 1849 d. 1918
  3. Jane Paterson Geggie b. 1851 d. 1880
  4. John Paterson Geggie b. 1853 d. 1884
  5. Thomas Geggie b. 1856 d. 1928 Canada
  6. James Geggie b. 1858 d. aft 1940 Illinois, USA
  7. William Sleight Geggie b. 1860 d. in USA
  8. Andrew Logan Geggie b. 1862 d. 1921 Canada - Prominent Minister
  9. George Simervil Geggie b. 1866 d. 1901
  10. Alexander Fife Geggie b. 1871 d. 1894

Jane died on 4 December 1887 of Valvular Disease of the Heart at Polwarth, Berwickshire now known as Scottish Borders.[4]

Jane is buried beside her husband Thomas and several of her children in Polwarth Parish Church, Polwarth, Berwickshire.[3][5]

The Transcription from the headstone reads:

In Memory of
Robert Geggie who died 8th June 1873 aged 25 years.
Jane Geggie his sister wife of John Foster, Polwarth died 25 June 1880 aged 29 years.
Alexander Geggie his brother 23 May 1894 aged 23 years.
Jane Paterson Geggie his mother died 4th Dec 1887 aged 61.
Also Thomas Geggie late tenant of Polwarth Mill who died at Gavinton 6 August 1892 aged 70.

Research Notes

Marriage

Lamberton Toll House held irregular marriages where a couple could get married in front of two witnesses and be married outwith the normal church practices. This was outlawed in England and therefore many people travelled to Scotland to places like Lamberton Toll or the more well known Gretna Green. The Lamberton toll records are not digitized nor are they available via the Scotlands People website. However if you live locally to Edinburgh or are visiting the area you can make arrangements to visit New Register House of Scotland. New Register House is where all the archives of Scotland's historical records are kept. The Lamberton Toll records are available on microfilm to researchers in the ScotlandsPeople Centre (reference MR101) and as a photocopy to readers in the Historical Search Room (reference RH2/8/84).[2]
