Biography

Andrew is born on February 14, 1860 in or near Ingersoll, Canada West (Ontario), the son of Thomas Paterson (1822-1892) and Elizabeth Thomson (1825-1903). His father, Thomas, was born in Upper Canada two years after his family had arrived from Scotland and cleared the land -- Lot 28, Concession 3 of Scarborough Township – now the southeast corner of Finch Avenue and Kennedy Road in the city of Toronto. On his mother’s side, his great grandfather, Archibald Thomson (1749-1819) was the brother of the first European settler in Scarborough Township (David Thomson and his wife, Mary Glendinning). Charles’ parents had just recently (1848 or 1849) moved from Scarborough Township in York County to a farm in North Oxford Township, Oxford County. It is likely that the farm was in Concession II, west half of lot 1, with the Ingersoll & Thames Ford Gravel Road bisecting the farm at an angle.

He is one year old, living in a log house with his family in the 1861 census. He is 10-years old and in school in the 1871 census. He is 21-years old in the 1881 census, living at home in Oxford North Township, Oxford South County. The census appears to indicate that he is a farmer. Interestingly, he also appears in a second census record in 1881: in this one, he is living in Ingersoll and is shown to be a student. The likely explanation is that he was boarding in Ingersoll to go to school and both households listed him when the census taker knocked on the door.

On November 20, 1889 Andrew marries Barbara MUNROE (1859-1936) in Ingersoll, Ontario. (Her surname is sometimes spelt “Monro.”) The wedding is in the house of the bride. Barbara was born in Ingersoll, Canada West, just a few kilometres from the Paterson farm. Her father, John Monroe (c1822-?), was born in Scotland and her mother, Ann Price (1829>1900), was born in England. The first record of the family is in the 1861 census. Barbara is one year old living with her family in Ingersoll. Her father is a carpenter. In the 1871 census she is still in Ingersoll living with her widowed mother, Ann, and four brothers and a sister. Three of her brothers work, which is presumably how the family supports itself (one is a carpenter, one is a cabinet maker and one is an apprentice). She is still living at home in the 1881 census,

US census records show that Andrew and Barbara immigrate to the United States in 1889. So it seems they left Canada right after the wedding. They first live in Pennsylvania and two children are born there in 1891 and 1894. One is born in Austin in Potter County. Andrew has an older brother, Archibald Paterson, living in Austin. But they move to Detroit fairly soon after 1894 and that is where Andrew practices law. They can be found in the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 census records in Detroit. In the first census record (1900), Andrew’s occupation is actually shown as an insurance agent. Perhaps his law practice had something to do with insurance?

Barbara dies in 1936 and in the 1940 census record Andrew, a widower, is now 79 years old and still working as a lawyer. He is living by himself and he works 52 weeks a year.

Andrew dies in Detroit on January 3, 1946, out-living both his children:

  • George Cornell Paterson (1891-1945) + (1915) Gretchen Schremsen (c1894-?)
  • Marjorie Paterson (1894-1922) + (1920) Harry. H. Whittingham (1894-?)
