Biography

Charles is born on August 22, 1892 in North Oxford Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada. His father is of Scots descent, born to a family that settled in Scarborough Township in 1820. Scarborough is now a part of the city of Toronto. His grandparents moved from Scarborough to a farm in Oxford County in about 1848 or 1849. The farm was near Ingersoll which is about 150 kilometres west of Toronto. His father, John Paterson (1851-1931), was born on this farm and, when he grew up, worked variously as a labourer and a mason in the area around Ingersoll. His mother, Alice Jessop (1855 or 1857-1897), was probably also born in Oxford County and her parents were both born in Ireland.

Charles died as a baby and is buried with his parents in the Ingersoll Rural Cemetery.
