Biography

Andrew is born on May 5, 1865 in Scarborough Township, Canada West (now Toronto, Ontario). He is the son of Andrew Paterson (1837-1898) and Margaret Bertram (1842-1914) and is baptised on June 25, 1865 in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Bendale, Scarborough. In the 1871 census, he is a five-year old boy living at home on the family farm. This farm, “Shepard’s Bush”, had been homesteaded by his grandparents, Andrew Paterson (1797-1884) Isabella Brunton (1799-1862). It was in Lot 28, Concession 3 of Scarborough Township, now the south-east corner of Finch Avenue and Kennedy Road in the city of Toronto. In 1871 the grandfather still lives on the farm in a house beside Andrew’s. Andrew and all six of his siblings are still living on the family farm in the 1881 census. An aunt and uncle and her grandfather live with them.

In 1891 Andrew, now shown as a “farmer”, is living on the family farm with his parents, four siblings and an aunt and uncle. He becomes the third “Andrew Paterson” to farm this land. In the 1901 census, he is still there with his mother (now a widow) and four siblings. In 1911 he is there with his widowed mother and two siblings. He is now listed as the “head” of the household. In the 1921 census records, Andrew is still on the family farm, living with two sisters – Euphemia and Mabel. From the census records, it appears that his widowed sister, Joan Etta (Paterson) Little has moved into the second house on the property, along with her eight-year old daughter, Freda.

Andrew never marries. He dies in 1933 and is buried with his parents in the cemetery of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Bendale, Scarborough.

[3] 1871 census, Ontario, York East, 45, pg 13-14, household 42: Andrew Paterson (33) – farmer & manager (there is a squiggly line joining Andrew to household 41 immediately above which is his father, Andrew (73) and two siblings ); Margaret (29); Margaret (8); Andrew (5); Violet (4); Euphemia (born in Nov/70). It is known from the full details of the 1871 census, obtained by Barbara Paterson (1927-2009), that the original family farm, still owned by the father, Andrew Paterson, had 2 houses on it. The son, Andrew, has built another house on the farm and is apparently managing both operations, presumably with the help of his younger brother, William.
