Biography

Clarence is born in the 1860’s, either in Toronto or, what is now Sutton, Canada West. His father, John Paterson (c1839-1884) is a lawyer and he was born near Streetsville, Toronto Township in what would become Peel County to the west of Toronto. John’s parents, the paternal grandparents of Clarence, were the original homesteaders on the farm just to the west of Streetsville and they likely arrived in Upper Canada (Canada West was Upper Canada prior to 1841) from Scotland in 1820. His mother, Eleanor Isabella (Nellie) Bourchier (1841-?) was born in Georgina Township in what would become the village of Sutton, lying just south of Lake Simcoe. She was descended from an English family; her father had been in the Royal Navy. Her father, Clarence’s maternal grandfather, was James O’Brian Bourchier and he was an important person in Georgina Township, owning a saw mill, a grist mill and a general store.

Clarence’s parents were married in Georgina Township in 1866 but Clarence is not shown with the family in the 1871 census so it is assumed he died as an infant.
