Only two years after the Jacobite Rebellion led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), Ambrose Patey was born to Ambrose Patey and Mary (Ewan) Patey, and was baptised on 2 September 1747 in Stokenham, Devon, England. [1] The birth date recorded above is actually the baptism date; birthdate is unlikely to be forthcoming, as there were no birth certificates at that period, and only the baptism was recorded.
On 4 January 1774, Ambrose married Elizabeth Winter in Stokenham. [2] The year after (1775) saw the beginning of the American War of Independence against British rule.
Together, the couple had six children: William Winter Patey, Sarah and Elisabeth (twins), Ambrose, Robert, and John.
