Biography

Sarah Patterson was born between 1777 and 1780, in North Carolina, based on the age and place of birth given in the 1850 Federal Census, of Cherokee Co., and St. Clair Co., Alabama. Sarah appears in the 1850 Federal Census twice. Sarah appears in the Federal Census in Cherokee Co., Alabama, enumerated on the 22nd November, 1850, in the household of Samuel P. Owens, and Sarah's age is given as 73. Sarah appears in the Federal Census in St Clair Co., Alabama, enumerated on the 5th December, 1850, and Sarah is listed as the head of household, and her age is given as 70. Appearing in both census' with Sarah is Jason Owens, age 25 in Sarah's household in St Clair Co., and age 26 in Samuel P. Owens household in Cherokee Co., Alabama. The census taker noted in both census' for Jason Owens that Jason was "Idiotic".

Sarah's maiden name of Patterson is based on her, and her husband, Jesse Owen having received bequest, and Jesse Owen being named as one of the Executors of the Will of Samuel Patterson, dated 1 May, 1813, Haywood Co., North Carolina: “In the Name of god amen I Samuel Patterson of Haywood County and State of North Carolina being of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed by god do this first day of may AD 1813 make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following - that is to say after my funeral charge is paid and just debts satisfied. First I give and bequeath a saddle and sadle bags unto Samuel Patterson my brothers son. I give and Bequeath unto SALLEY OWEN one bed and furniture and a chest. I give and Bequeath unto David Cason two pair of britches. I give and Bequeath unto Feby (Phoebe) Dunn one pot. I give and Bequeath unto JESSEY OWEN all my money due to me on notes of hand. I mount on the hole different notes 76 dollars and 75 cents also 15 dollars and fifty cents. I give and Bequeath unto Samuel Patterson Owen one silver watch. And I hearby make and ordain my worth friends JESSEY OWEN and Samuel Patterson Executors of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I the said Samuel Patterson have to this my last will and testament set my hand and Seal the day and year above written. Samuel (his mark) Patterson. Signed Sealed published and Declared by the said Samuel Patterson the testator as his last will and testament in the presents of us who ware present at the time of signing and sealing these presents Elijah Owen George Williams Levy (his mark) (last name illegible). Elijah Owens was offered to prove but on his Oath could not say that he ever heard the deceased make or endorse it his will or make a mark.”

Sarah Patterson married Jesse Owens in North Carolina sometime before 1800, as Jesse Owens appears in the 1800 Federal Census of Buncome Co., North Carolina, with a wife and one child, a daughter under age 10.

Sarah and Jesse appear in the 1810 Federal Census of Haywood Co., North Carolina. It is likely that Jesse did not move as Haywood Co., North Carolina was formed from Buncombe Co., in 1808.

Sarah and Jesse were in Alabama by 1821, as Jesse sold 100 acres in Haywood Co., North Carolina in November 1821 to Lewis Smith. The deed says in part, Jessie Owen of St. Clair County Alabama . . . The deed is recorded in Haywood Co., North Carolina, in Haywood Co. Deed Book A, page 143.

Sarah and Jesse were in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census' of St. Clair Co., Alabama.

Sarah appears in the 1850 Federal Census in St. Clair Co., Alabama, as the head of household. Sarah also appears in the 1850 Federal Census in Cherokee Co., Alabama in the household of Samuel P. Owens. Sarah was very likely visiting Samuel and his family in Cherokee Co., as this census was enumerated in November 1850, and the census for St. Clair Co., was enumerated in December, 1850.

Sarah died St. Clair Co., Alabama, after the 5th of December, 1850 Federal Census and before the 1860 Federal Census.

I asked to have the merger of Patterson-7351 and Patterson-1443 confirmed in October, 2015. Please read the biography and source list for Patterson-7351 which will confirm Sarah's maiden name of Patterson and married name as Owen and Jesse/Jessey Owen as Sarah's husband. I do not know where people got the "Pinkney" name, but there is nothing in any records in North Carolina or Alabama that shows Sarah was ever a Pinkney or married to a Pinkney.

Patterson-7351 and Patterson-1443 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse and similar dates
I have adopted Patterson-7351 (formerly Pinkney-162) and have added additional sources and documentation (NOT from other people's family trees) that proves Sarah (Sally) is the same Sarah Patterson as Patterson-1443. Note the Will of Samuel Patterson in Haywood Co., NC that mentions Sarah Owen and her husband Jesse Owen. I found Jesse Owen in the 1800 Federal Census, Buncombe Co., NC age group for Jesse and female was age 16 thru 25, & one female under age 10. I found a deed in Haywood Co., NC that confirms Jesse Owens in St. Clair Co, Ala was the same as the Jesse Owens from Haywood Co., NC. I did not locate Sarah in the 1860 Federal Census, or in the Owen Family cemetery in Etowah Co., Ala. or any cemetery in Ala. So I question the exact date of death. Please confirm the merger

Pinkney-162 and Patterson-1443 are not ready to be merged because: I have no evidence to confirm which surname is correct. I have found it as Pinkney AND as Patterson in various family tree records. I believe it is the same person, but the correct surname should be ascertained before merging.

Pinkney-162 and Patterson-1443 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth year and place.

Same husband.
