Biography

  • LIFE SKETCH: JOHN THOMAS PATTERSON, Robert and Fanny's ninth child and the second of that name, was born on 26 June 1847 at Chatsbury. His father Robert's occupation was listed as Superintendent, and John was christened on 15 September 1847. On 5 February 1872 he married Isabella FLANNIGAN (sister to Mary Jane and Frances Amelia) at Yorkborough, Goulbourn. John also selected land near Gerilgambeth and was the licensee of the Locomotive at Junee from 1881 to 1882, and the Australian Arms from 1877 to 1880. (In the obituary notice of their daughter, Frances PATTERSON (Edgar), she recalled that when her parents conducted the Wantabadgery Hotel, the bushranger, Captain Moonlight, held two of her brothers, aged four and seven, hostage for a time during the raid on the village. Moonlight was arrested from under a bed in the hotel and was later hanged for shooting a policeman. John and his family moved to Tumut in about 1895 and his occupation was that of carpenter. John died on 9 February 1911, aged 64 years, and is buried at the Presbyterian Cemetery, Tumut, leaving five children, two males and three females (one male and one female deceased). Isabella died on 4 February 1924, aged 88 years, and is also buried at Tumut in the Presbyterian Old Cemetry. • CAPTAIN MOONLITE and THE PATTERSONS: The following is an extract written by John's niece, Hilda PATTERSON Nash, daughter of John's brother and sister-in-law, George and Frances Patterson: "Uncle Jack was at Wantabadgery. He had the Australian Arms Hotel near Wantabadgery Station, and his sons and the hotel patrons were captured by the Moonlite gang and taken to the homestead where the owners and staff were prisoners. But they left Aunty Isabella at the hotel and told her to bring Uncle Jack down to the homestead when he got back. But Uncle Jack wanted to go into Wagga for the Police. My father, George Patterson, was with him, so my father and another man went back to Wagga on horseback and brought the Police. George was holding the Police horse while the shooting was going on, while Moonlite held my cousin, young Bert Patterson, prisoner. He was only about 7 or 8. He ran away and Moonlite called on him to stop and fired shots all around the lad, but it made him run faster. Moonlite is supposed to have said, "What I would give to own a boy like that!" When the people were prisoners in the homestead, the bushrangers gave them wine and beer from the cellars and they fed them well. They made the homestead owners wait on them. Moonlite wouldn't have taken prisoners, but when the gang went to the homestead first and asked for work and food and shelter, they refused them, so he made the homestead owners wait on the prisoners."

  • NEWSPAPER ARTICLE re DEATH: The TUMUT and ADELONG TIMES, Friday 10 February 1911. DEATH OF MR JOHN PATTERSON. For some time past, Mr John Patterson, of Newtown, had been suffering from a malignant disease of the stomach, which created much anxiety on the part of his wife and family, and Dr Browne has been in constant attendance on the case, and did his utmost to prolong life, but never felt at any juncture that there was much chance of overcoming the ailment. Deceased was for a long time a martyr to indegestion, and possibly same had something to do with introducing the malady which brought about his death. He was an honest, hardworking man, his calling being that of a carpenter and builder, in which he gave the utmost of satisfaction to everyone who employed him. He exhibited a great fondness for the trade too, never being idle. For a long time he worked at buildings on the Gibraltar mine, and after that was almost constantly employed by Mr Grill in the erection of buildings, and his last contract before being laid up with the illness that proved fatal was helping to effect improvements at Mr Chapman's store. He was of an affable and genial nature, a kind and indulgent father, a fond husband, a peaceful neighbour, and upright in integrity. He leaves a sorrowing widow and five members in the family - two sons and three daughters, all grown up and settled in life - to mourn their sad loss, and we sincerely sympathise with them in their sorrowful trouble. The names of the family are Messrs Herbert and Jack Patterson, Mrs J Hayden, Mrs J Edgar, and Mrs Prowse (Adelong). Deceased died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Edgar, where he had been laid up for the past three weeks.
