Ruth was born in 1763. It's unclear if she was born in Scotland or Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Writings refer to her as a "Scottish lassie". She married Hugh Stewart about 1790, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. After their marriage, the couple settled on the William Patterson farm, at Letort Springs, in Middleton Township, (now South Middle).north of Carlisle. Hugh and Ruth had 5 children, William, John, Joseph, James and Hugh.
Hugh came to Whetstone, Ohio from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania about 1821, where he purchased 240 acres for $300. In late 1821, Hugh and 24 others, loaded Conestoga wagons and traveled to Crawford County, Ohio. He built a round log cabin, 20 feet square, having one door and one window. Mrs. Stewart came in the spring of 1822, accompanied by a widow, Betsy Anderson, who served as their housekeeper.
Ruth was not in good health, she died soon after her arrival in Crawford County. Her death was one of the first deaths recorded in the township of Whetstone.
