Biography

"MRS. E. HILTON" Glen Innes Examiner (NSW: 1908 - 1954) 11 March 1941: [1]
MRS. E. HILTON
Mrs. Elizabeth Hilton (relict of the late Mr. William Hilton), died at her residence in Meade Street on Sunday afternoon after a long illness. She was aged 88 years.
The deceased lady was a member of a well-known old time family of Tent Hill district namely, the Patterson family, and prior to marriage, spent her girlhood days in that locality where she was well and favourably known.
Some years back Mrs. Hilton took up residence in Meade St., Glen Innes, where she remained up to the period of her demise.
Prior to that time deceased led a very active life, and possessed many interests to which she devoted undivided attention. A loyal and devoted adherent of the Roman Catholic faith, she lived her days in strict accordance with the highest principles of that religion, and in so doing manifested those attributes of charity, tolerance and devotion which are so fully developed in one of truly Christian character. Her protracted illness was borne with grand patience and fortitude.
As one who was nurtured in the wonderful old pioneering environments, the late Mrs. Hilton bore her full share of the trials, tribulations, and sometimes terrors of the far-back days, when courage, self-reliance and devotion to duty were essential characteristics in one's everyday life.
In her girlhood days, settlers had no association with the amenities of life as we know them to-day— their lot was one of high unceasing toil, anxiety and strenuous battling with circumstances more often than not on the most adverse character. But the deceased lady, like others of those days, carried her due share of the burden willingly and uncomplainingly, and in all phases of life displayed traits which amply exemplified her fine purpose and breadth of character. Her attitude towards others with whom she came in contact, particularly those to whom fortunes had been lacking in any degree, was one of pure sympathy, reinforced by ever ready willingness to extend assistance of practical nature. And she responded to many demands upon her charitable instincts—demands which she met with admirable readiness and generosity.
The funeral took place this afternoon. The remains being laid to rest in the Roman Catholic portion of the Glen Innes cemetery.
Services were conducted by Rev. Monsignor Tobin and arrangements were made by R. T. Lightfoot and Co.
