Biography

Sarah Patterson was born about 1832 in Maryland. She was the daughter of Robert Patterson and Elizabeth Wheeler. Sarah married Charles Hopwood on December 30, 1849 in Butler County, Ohio.[1] In the 1850 census, Charles and Sarah stated they were married within the year.[2]

Known Children of Sarah Patterson and Charles Hopwood

1. Mary Hopwood b. 1851
2. Francis Hopwood b. 1852
3. Charles Hopwood b. 1854

Charles died about 1855[3] and Sarah married William W. Foster on May 11, 1858 in Butler county.[4] The only known child of William and Sarah is Isabella May Foster, born in 1859 and died in 1860.[5][6]

Sarah and her children, Mary and Charles Hopwood lived Butler County with her new husband William Foster.[5][7] Her daughter Francis, lived with Sarah's sister, Merinda Griffis.[8] By 1880, Sarah is an inmate of the Dayton Asylum for the Insane in Montgomery County.[9] She is stated to be a widow.[9] We know no more of Sarah until the 1900 census, when she is now described as a patient in Dayton State Hospital (which was formerly the Dayton Asylum).[10] She states she is the mother of 3 children.[10]

Sometime between the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Sarah had been released from the Dayton State Hospital and was living with her daughter, Mary Konley in St. Marys.[11] In the 1910 census, Sarah stated she had 4 children, only 3 are living.[11] Just into the new year of 1915, her daughter Francis (Vail) died.[12]

Sarah died on March 14, 1915 in St. Marys.[13] She is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys (Auglaize County), Ohio.[14]
