Biography

This profile is part of the Patterson Name Study.

Our research leads us to believe that our Elizabeth is Elizabeth Patterson because of naming trends of that time. In fact, we believe that her father may be Joseph Patterson. Elizabeth's 2nd son was name Joseph Patterson Jones and that name has been carried down several generations.

Thomas Jones and his family are believed to have been in SC until about 1793. Two children who had children living in the 1880 census stated that their parents were born in SC. By 1799 they were in Christian Co, KY where the remainder of their children were born. They were in Crawford Co, KY by 1815 and then were early settlers of Paris, Edgar Co, IL in 1821. Thomas Jones died there in 1829 and the oldest living son, Joseph Patterson Jones, emigrated to Texas in 1833. Several other siblings and Elizabeth, their mother, emigrated with Robertson's Colony and Enoch and his family with his mother registered there on 16 Feb 1836. By 1850 Elizabeth is living with her widowed daughter, Elizabeth Jones Morgan, and her four children in Panola Co, TX.

Rusk Co, TX Document dated 22 Oct 1852 with mark of Elizabeth Patterson Jones shows she was alive on this date. She sold half of her league and labor to J.P. Dumas for $1.00. Rusk Co, TX Land Books. Her son, Enoch Madison Jones, got the other half. They had helped her get the bill passed in the Texas Legislature which gave her the land as an early settler.

The last document with Elizabeth's name on it is the sale of half her certificate discussed above. It is dated 20 Jan 1853. We believe she died shortly after that.

Note: A lot of Ancestry trees list Elizabeth's last name as Wilkerson. There was another Thomas Jones in South Carolina who married Elizabeth Wilkerson but that Elizabeth died in Illinois in 1820 and can prove our Elizabeth is still alive in Edgar, Illinois by the Will of her husband Thomas Jones and the probate. Also many records after that date when she had moved to Texas. The reason some give Elizabeth Wilkerson as the wife of our Thomas Jones is the marriage date which is close to what we think our Thomas and Elizabeth married. Elizabeth Wilkerson nor her husband Thomas Jones is the same as our Thomas Jones and Elizabeth Patterson.
