"James Patterson was a native of Scotland, born about 1633. He was one of the prisoners of war taken by Cromwell, probably at the battle of Worcester, 3 Sep 1651. The prisoners were sold as bond-servants by the English Government, and a large number of them were sent to New England on the ship "John and Sarah" of London, Captain John Green, master; they embarked 6 November,1651, probably sailed about 14 November, 1651, and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, probably in the following May, as on 13 May 7, 1652 the list of servants sent on board the ship was recorded in Boston. In 1658 he was a resident of Billerica, as he then received a grant of land by that town. Between 1658 and 1685 he received 16 different grants of land from the town of Billerica.In 1661 his name appears upon town records in a vote of the propiertors. He married 29 May 1662, Rebecca Stevenson, before "Thomas Danforth, Esq". She was the daughter of Andrew Stevenson of Cambridge, and was born about 1642.
At a meeting of Selectmen & Committee of Militia held October 4, 1685, in persuance of an order by the Hon. Councill sent unto them," twelve garrisons were formed in Billerica. They appoint James Patterson's house for garrison and to entertain John Baldwin, Edward & Thomas Farmer, Henery & John Jeffts & two soldiers, 8 soldiers 4 families (Billerica town records P. 121). He was admitted Freemen 18 April, 1690. His will was dated 12 May, 1701, and he died in Billerica 14 July, 1701, aged about sixthy-eight , years, according to the town records, but his inventory states that he died 14 Jun 1701".[2]
"Among the adherennts of Charles II, in the Scottish army, defeated in the battle of Worcester by Oliver Cromwall, and transported to New England to be sold as slaves for a term of years, is found the name of James Patterson. The prisoners sailed from London on the ship John & Sarah about November 11, 1651, and arrived at Charlestown before May, 1652 (Register 1, pp 357-380, Brown's Hist. of the Highland Clans, vol.ii, p. 61). ....He married March 29, 1662, Rebecca Stevenson, daughter of Andrew and Jane Stevenson of Cambridge".[3]

Between 1658 and 1685 -- James Patterson received 16 other grants of land from the town of Billerica. [4]
March 29, 1662 -- James Patterson and Rebecca Stevenson married at Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [4]
April 18, 1690 -- James Patterson became a freeman at Billerica. [4]
At a meeting of the selectmen and committee held October 8, 1675, an order from the honorable council sent them was read twelve garrison's were formed in Billerica. They appoint James Paterson's house for garrison, etc. [4]
His will was dated May 12, 1701, and he died in Billerica, July 14, 1701, aged about sixty-eight years.
Rebecca Stevenson had been married to Thomas Dantforth, Esq. before she married James Patterson. [4]
Rebecca was born about 1642, daughter of Andrew Stevenson, of Cambridge, Massachusetts. [4]
