Biography

Numerous genealogies have placed Andrew Pauley of Kanawha County, Virginia, and Hancock County, Indiana, as a son of Edward and Mary Agnes Polly of Perry County, Kentucky. Edward and Mary are known to have had a son Andrew, but this assignment is not correct.[1]
Records clearly show that Andrew came to Hancock County from Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was the son of Joseph Pauley of that county and came to Indiana with his brother Joseph Pauley Jr. They raised their families in Jackson Township in Hancock County.
Andrew is found in the federal census of 1820 and 1830 in Kanawha County, and then Hancock County, Indiana, thereafter. The ages of the children show very good agreement from one location to the other.
Andrew's father is believed to be Joseph Pauley who came to Kanawha from Pittsylvania County, Virginia, before 1810 with his brothers Henry and John. Andrew would surely be a son of one of them. Given Andrew's birth in 1790 we see he fits with Joseph's census record, not Henry's or John's, both of whom married after Joseph was born.[2]
Andrew married at least three times. His first wife was Phebe Hayzlett whom he married in 1812 in Kanawha County.[3] She was the mother of his children.
According to the original minister returns of John Lee, a Baptist minister who served Kanawha Co., Andrew Polly married Phebe "Hazelett" in the year 1812. Two years earlier, Samuel Priestly married Isabell Hazelett--probably a sister to Phebe Pauley. The Pauleys, Priestlys and several other Hayzlett families all lived in the same vicinity between today's Tornado and Alum Creeks in West Virgina. They often appear as witnesses in each other's legal transactions.
Andrew's second wife was the widow Mary Ann Francis whom he married in 1849 in Hancock County,[4] and sometime before 1860 he married Sarah (Goble) Liston, widow of Edmund Liston.
The census shows Joseph and Phebe were the parents of four sons and six daughters born over the period 1813 to 1838. Among the candidates:
  1. Martha, m. Hezekiah Barrett, 20 Feb 1834
  2. Edward, m. Nancy McCorkhill, 26 May 1836
  3. Andrew, m. Rebecca Higgins, 16 May 1840
  4. Alfred, m. Lavina McCorkhill, 27 Feb 1841
  5. Atha, m. Jacob Priddy, 28 Aug 1842
  6. Catharine, m. Robert Jacobs, 21 Dec 1846
  7. Rebecca, m. Edin Burris, 14 Aug 1850

  1. The theory depends on Edward being the man of that name in the tax list of Kanawha County, Virginia, in 1806. But the Edward in the tax list is now known to be a different Edward Pauley.
  2. But Andrew had a close relationship with Henry. He is often found adjacent to Henry in Kanawha tax and census records, and daughter Atha is apparently named after Henry's wife Athaliel.
