Thomas Payne ... [1]
THOMAS PAINE (ABT 1645) MASSACRED BY INDIANS · 8 September 2013 · 3 Comments
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The origin this Thomas Paine or Payne is undetermined. A number of persons of this name were living in New England at this period. He was married to Elizabeth Milbury after moving to York. He first appears in York in 1679 as grantee of an unidentified tract next to that of William Freethy, although he likely was the man absent from meetings in July 1674 (Scarboro cases).
In 1683 he was granted a tract "next behind Henry Donnell," where he lived until the Candlemas Day Massacre on 24 Jan 1691/92 when he and his wife were killed and his children, Bethia and Samuel, were made captive and carried to Canada.
She was redeemed in 1698. No record of Samuel has been found in Canada. Their grandfather Milbury willed 10 shillings apiece to them in 1695. His daughter Bethia, at that time unmarried, sold her father's 1683 grant with full warranty on 5 Dec 1711.
