John Payne Sr. was born in Dedham, (then) Suffolk County, Mass. Bay Colony, on 27 April 1646, the son of Thomas & Rebecca Payne.[1] The family home was on Dedham Island, a peninsula formed by a bend in the Charles River just north of the town center.
He married-1 in Dedham on 7 Feb. 1676 to Mary Day, one of the daughters of Ralph & Susan (Fairbanks) Day.[2]
John Payne first appeared in the town (versus vital) records in a list dated 22:9mo:1680 which listed rate payers for town charges.[3]
His father died 3 August 1686, leaving him and his brother Thomas ”all the houses and lands not already disposed of equally divided," Thomas to divide, John to choose first; John was also to receive the weaving and husbandry tools.[4]
John settled in that part of Dedham which became Needham in 1711 and Wellesley in 1881.[5] [6]
Mary died 25 Oct 1694.[7]
He married second Martha (Devotion) Ruggles, widow John Ruggles 2d of Roxbury who died 16 Dec 1694. On 14 Feb 1704/5 Martha Payne late Ruggles signed the final account of John Ruggles estate. [8]
Martha died in Needham 12 Jan 1714.[9]
John died in Needham between 12 Jan 1725/6 and 13 Jun 1726. He signed his will ‘John Pain”, mentioned daughters Rebeka Boyden, Mary Barber, Susanna Pain and Sarah Pain and left the home to son John. For a copy of his will and more, see [10]
