Arrived Sydney 10 December 1853 aged 37 on board ship Herefordshire, accompanied by son Richard.[1]
His wife was Susanna who was born in Brentwood, Essex, UK around 1822 and was still living at the time of the 1851 UK census, when the nuclear family (Richard, Susanna and son Richard age 12) was living at Stoke Demerel, Devonshire.[2]At the time of the 1841 Census baby Richard was living with his Grandparents (Great-Grandparents?) in Heavitree, Devon.[3]
At the time of Immigration, Richard was among the widowers on board the Herefordshire. The date of Susanna's death is not known. Richard married a second time to Mary Ann Foster on 29 August 1854 in the Parish of Holy Trinity, Sydney, in the County of Cumberland. Witnesses were Elias and Ester Garrat of the Parramatta Road, Ashfield. The bride and the witnesses signed the register with their marks.[4]
Richard was admitted to Parramatta Gaol in 1857. Gaol Entrance Record available, but no further information.
Richard died 27 May 1898 at No.1 Barker Street, Petersham, NSW., and was buried on 28 May at the Church of England Cemetery at the Necropolis, Rookwood, NSW. Witnesses to the burial were R. and E. Payne. The Death Certificate notes that Richard was twice married but that the name of the first wife (mother of Richard son) was unknown. There was no issue from the second marriage to Mary Ann Foster.[5]
