Biography

Alpha Payne served in the New York Militia in the War of 1812
Service started: December 1813
Unit(s): Capt Benajah Holbrook’s Co.
Service ended: January 1814

Alpha was born on February 13, 1787, the second of thirteen children born to Ebenezer Leach Payne and Keziah Kinney (Kinne, Kenny) in Hinsdale, Berkshire, Massachusetts.[1][2]

He married Nancy Pease in New Lebanon, Columbia, New York, United States, on September 3, 1810. The marriage ceremony was conducted by a Justice of the Peace. Although no marriage certificate has been located, proof of the marriage was offered via sworn affidavits after Alpha’s death when his wife, Nancy, made application for a War of 1812 Widow’s Pension. [3]

In the Widow’s Pension file, Alpha’s brother, Stephen Payne, age 87, then a resident of Tonawanda, Erie County, New York, gave a sworn affidavit on 12 Aug 1878, that he knew Alpha Payne and Nancy Pease in Alpha’s lifetime and he knew they were married in 1810 (although he was not present), and he knew that they remained married all of Alpha’s life and he knew Nancy’s maiden name was Nancy Pease.[4]

Also in the Widow’s Pension file, Alpha’ sister, Keziah P. Barrett born April 1809, then a resident of Bellville, Richland County, Ohio, gave a sworn affidavit on 10 Aug 1878. Keziah stated that she knew Alpha and Nancy as long as she could remember, and that they lived together as husband and wife, and continued to live as husband and wife as long as Alpha lived.[5]

Alpha appears in the 1870 census for Shelby, Macomb, Michigan, which was enumerated June 6, 1870, days before his death.[6] Alpha died on June 10, 1870, as shown in the Widow’s Pension File as proved by sworn testimony of Albert Goff and Adelbert Harris.[7] He is buried in Prestonvile Cemetery, Macomb, Macomb County, MIchigan.[8]
