Biography

George Payne was reportedly born in about 1677 in Rappahannock County in the Colony of Virginia.[citation needed] His origins are disputed.

Notes from Twelve Va Counties (book in Valparaiso Library) Goochland Co. chapter:

"Payne was a prominent name in Goochland Co. The will of George Payne, High Sheriff of the County in 1732, of the Parish of St. James, Goochland, dated December 3, 1744, mentions his wife, Mary Woodson, and his sons, Josias(Josiah), George and John.

The Paynes were closely related, through marriages and by blood, to the Spotswoods, to Martha Washington, and to Dolly Payne Madison.

George Payne, ancestor of the Paynes of Campbell county, came from Bedfordshire, England. He and his brother Robert came to America together. Settling in Fauquier county. George held a grant from King George, embracing land in Goochland, Buckingham, Bedford and Campbell counties and land lying on Dan river in southern Virginia and northern North Carolina.[1]

He married Mary, the daughter of John Woodson; was a justice of the peace from 1728-29, and sheriff of Goochland from 1734-37; died in 1744.

His son, Colonel John Payne, born 1713, inherited a large fortune and the family seat White Hall, in Goochland. He was a member of the House of Burgesses from 1752 to 1768 inclusive, lieutenant-colonel of militia and member of the Revolutionary Committee of Safety of Goochland. John Payne married, 1st, Miss Archer.

Children:
  1. John m. Mary, daughter of John Chichester;
  2. Archer m., 1st, Martha, daughter of Captain Nathaniel West Dandridge of the English army; m., 2nd, Betsy Brooks and lived at New Market, Goochland county, an estate given him by his father in 1775
  3. Robert died unmarried in 1776.

Research Notes

  • Needs Relationship Review: Two different fathers listed, William or Richard. Spratlin-29 18:40, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Will recorded 3 Dec 1744 and proven 15 Jan 1745; Goochland Co. Deed Bk 4, pp. 484-6.

It is suggested in Campbell Chronicles that this George may have come from England with a brother Robert.

George was born in about 1670. He passed away in 1744.[4]

Disputed Parents

Various claims have been made concerning his parents, but there does not appear to be any reliable source supporting any of them. Previously claims concerning his parents include:

  • The original profile claimed that he was the son of William Payne and Susanna Merryman. However, William's son was not of age when he wrote his will in 1696 and based on the known ages of his siblings, he could not have been born before 1689 which makes William's son too young to have married in 1705. William's family is detailed in The Paynes of Virginia.

Records

Virginia Births and Christenings, 1584-1917[5]

Name: George Payne
Event Type: Birth
Event Date: 21 Nov 1707
Event Place: St James Northam Parish, Goochland, Virginia, United States
Gender: Male
Father's Name: Geor. Payne
Mother's Name: Mary Woodson

Origins

This is food for though: By the fact that the Pain/Payne... names are prevalent in Goochland may be because the Pain family is of Huguenot origin. This is a Huguenot: Pain, Elie : a merchant in Paris, who fled from France at the Revocation and settled in London, where he greatly prospered. Numerous French Protestants of the same name fled into England, where their descendants still survive under the names of Pain, Paine, or Payne. At Deal and Sandwich, at Rye, and in the southern counties, the Paines are numerous. One of the ministers of the French church at Bristol was a M. Pain. Louis Pain was a well-known author, and William was an architect in London.[6]

DNA Information

yDNA testing shows that George is not descended from John "the Immigrant" Payne and George is listed as an "Earliest Known Ancestor".[7][8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:

As explained in the g2g thread, I'm detaching George from William Payne-2118 and Susannah Merriman-249. William and Susannah had a son George who was a bit younger and can be tied to them through land and wills. Their family is detailed in The Paynes of Virginia.

At this point no one knows who this George's parents are but yDNA testing shows that he did not descend from John the immigrant. http://papayne.rootsweb.ancestry.com/dna-project/ https://www.familytreedna.com/public/payne?iframe=ycolorized
