Biography

Descendant
Descendant of Colonel John Payne (1713–1784) a Revolutionary War Patriot.

Archibald "Archer" Payne (12 Sep 1748 - 2 Jun 1831)

Archibald aka Archer, Payne is ASSUMED To be the father of Catherine Payne[1][2]

His parentage is UNKNOWN

Note: Not sure why the parentage is marked as unknown: In the will of Col John Payne, he left Newmarket to his son Archer. There is controversy over the wives of Col Payne. See reference to will below:
Colonel John Payne (1713-1784) perhaps the most illustrious of the name, was a Burgess from Goochland from 1752 to 1768 and was lieutenant-colonel of militia. In his will, which bequeathed a large estate, he left his residence White Hall to his son, John Payne, Jr and he left Newmarket to his son Archer, who married the daughter of Nathaniel West Dandridge of Hanover, and his wife, Dorothea Spotswood, daughter of the Governor. [3]
The Paynes were closely related, through marriages and by blood to the Spotswoods, to Martha Washington and to Dolly Payne Madison.

He died after Oct 1786.

Archer Payne married Martha Dandridge 22 February 1770 and they had eleven children. Martha Dandridge Payne died by 1797; that year Payne married Betsy Brooks.[4]

Marriage

Colonial Families of the United States, vol. I states that Martha Dandridge (b. 20 Sep 1748, d. 28 Sep 1791) of Hanover County, Va., married in 1769, ARCHER PAYNE (b. 1748). On 7 Dec 1797, Archer married 2nd, Betsy Brooks. Archer was the son of John Payne (1713-1784) of Goochland County, by his wife Jean Archer. [5]

Archer and Martha D Payne had 11 children. According to FindAGrave, three of their daughters married sons of Col. John Bolling [b. 1700, and a member of the House of Burgessess for 30 yrs]; but clearly it's unlikely that three of Archer's daughters married the sons of a man almost 50 years older. John Bolling (not clear which) owned 20,000 acres, adjoining Nicholas Davies, in the present Boonsboro & Peakland sections of Lynchburg. Buried in Payne Family Cemetery at The Cottege on Ivy Creek.

Per Ruth H Early, the third son of Archer Payne, John Robert Dandridge Payne, married Susan Bryce and "lived for many years in Lynchburg". Archer's oldest daughter also married a Bryce. Archer's second son, Alexander Spotswood Payne, married Charlotte Brice, another daughter of Archibald Bryce, of Scotland.
