The son, Barnabus joined the 27th MO. Mtd. Inf. in Warrensburg, MO on 4th of July 1861 for :a 3 yr term-Pvt. in Co. A age:28 -- This being a week after his big brother George C. age:30 :joined and they were in the same Co. A.
Barnabus Jr. was also among the 150 men captured at the first battle of Lexington, MO Sept. 20 1861 and a month later all paroled. In Oct-Dec 1861 the 27th Regiment was disbanded and most of the men joined other regiments.
George C. did not but Barnabus did join Co.D 5th Provisional Enrolled MO. Militia
This PAYNE FAMILY is the example of the phrase of the CIVIL WAR...
"family against family, cousin against cousin."
I have heard & seen this in history books and really in the movies.. "Blue & Grey"
In researching this family we have found that 5 of their brothers stayed in North Carolina with their parents, and joined the Confederate States of America...

Payne-4836 and Payne-8129 appear to represent the same person because: please, believe me I tried to find a match to the one I just put in..
