Prisoner of General A.E. Burnside on Roanoke Island, Feb 8 1862

Their brother Barnabus joined the 27th Missouri Mtd. Inf. in Warrensburg, Missouri, on 4th of July 1861 for a 3 yr term-Pvt. in Co. A age:28 -- This being a week after his big brother George C. age:30 joined and they were in the same Co. A. This would be wearing the Blue Uniforms.

The Payne Family was one that split sides..George/Barnabus had 5 brothers that stayed in N.Carolina and fought & died for the South. (They are not related to my, Carole family, Payne's from KY.)

Barnabus was also among the 150 men captured at the first battle of Lexington, MO Sept. 20 1861 and a month later all paroled. In Oct-Dec 1861 the 27th Regiment was disbanded and most of the men joined other regiments. George C. did not but Barnabus did join Co.D 5th Provisional Enrolled MO. Militia

This PAYNE FAMILY is the example of the phrase of the CIVIL WAR...
"family against family, cousin against cousin."
I have heard & seen this in history books and really in the movies.. "Blue & Grey"
I have listed the brothers of the UNION ARMY
27th Missouri, Mounted Infantry,
George C and Barnabus JR

In researching this family I have found that 5 of their brothers stayed in North Carolina with their parents, and joined the Confederate States of America...

  1. Soloman 3Rd SGT. captured at Richmond VA April 3,1865
  2. Joseph RELEASED at Appomattox Court April 9 1865
  3. Sanford DIED at Camp Rader, Virginia cause unknown
  4. Alfred wounded/captured & POW at Point Lookout Maryland
  5. Charles DIED pneumonia Raleigh N.C Gen Hosp
they all joined out of Davidson County, North Carolina.

Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Wallburg, North Carolina
He passed away in 1863.
Plot: Left Row 17 #8
Shares his stone with his "Father"
