Violet was born in 1891 to parents Edgar and Elizabeth (nee Langley) at Pine Creek, near Terowie, in the mining district of South Australia that included Burra.
In 1892 Violet's father was in the Burra Hospital for a long time. Afterwards he took a position as keeper of the Troubridge lighthouse, and was again away from home. When he returned he took Violet, aged 3, and her brother away from their mother whom he accused of an adulterous affair. They did not see her from 1894 to 1900. Violet's father continued as a lighthousekeeper at various locations.
In 1900, Edgar divorced Elizabeth and gained custody of the children. At this time he was a lighthouse keeper at Cape Jervis.
In 1902, when Violet was 11 yrs, her father remarried, to Emma Cole, but no more children were born.
In 1908, a few days before her 17th birthday, Violet married grazier Archibald Buick of Kangaroo Island. When they returned from their honeymoon, this notice appeared in the Kangaroo Island Courier:
AN IMPROMPTU RECEPTION, Quite a novel trip was enjoyed by those who were fortunate enough to be on the Karatta on Saturday last when Mr and Mrs A. O. Buick re- turned to Hog Bay from their honey- moon. Their healths were toasted and drank enthusiastically by all present and speeches were given by Mr R. L. Barrett (Kingsoote) and Mr L. E. Clark (Hog Bay). Mr Buick responded on behalf of himself and his wife. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent at the impromptu banquet. The bunting which decor- ated the Karatta was taken down on her arrival here. The recent novel wedding at (near) Kingscote, added to this banqueting tend to something of the 'roman- tique' in Kangaroo Island weddings. Violet gave birth to 9 children.
She died in 1951 and is buried with her husband in the Kingscote Cemetery on Kangaroo Island.
