Biography

William was born before 1725 in Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Payne.

He passed away in sometime before February 16, 1818 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the date of his probated will. .[1]

Family Notes

His father, Thomas Payne married Catherine Lidford on 26 MAY 1715 in Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia. [2] They had the following children:

  2. Lettice Payne.
  3. Frances Payne.
  4. Thomas Payne.
  5. John Payne.
  6. Catherine Payne.
  7. Reuben Payne.
  8. Mary Payne.
  9. Philemon Payne.

Events

  • Anecdote Note: Migrated to Pittsylvania County Virginia about 1763.On January 18, 1763 he filed intent to acquire 400 acrs of land "on the Long branch of Panther Creek".
  • Listed on first tax list compiled for Pittsylvania County in 1767 .
  • 91/1780, Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson granted William Payne 250 acres lying near Poplar Branch of Mill Creek.He purchased additional 400 acres on both sides of Poplar Branch of Mill Creek on 9/121782 for 30 pounds from Thomas Mustain. This land joined his earlier 250 acre tract where he was living as early as 1765.
  • William paid back taxes on this land for 1765, 1766, and 1767. It was stated to be land lying on Sullens Creek patented for Thomas Mustain.
  • It appears that William lived the remainder of his life on his 650 acres of land located about 5 miles northeast of Chatham in Pittsylvania County Virginia.
  • William provided supplies for the Revolutionary War as follows "To William Payne for 30 lbs Pork @@25/impressed for C. (Continental) troops--7 sillings, 6 pence.
  • William Payne, [3] Will written 1/22/1803 and probated on 2/16/1818. [4]
  • William Payne owned at his death in 1818 land that eventually passed to the children of (Rev) Thomas Payne following Thomas's death in 1819 and then the death of his mother Sarah Nance Payne about 1821.
