Jonathan was born in 1770. Jonathan Payne died in 1845. [1] Jonathan Payne was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Stillwell Payne. He was married in Shelby Co., KY in August 1798 to Elizabeth Wright. According to a 50th wedding anniversary document (biography) created by a son, William Payne, his family moved to Owen County, IN in the fall of 1822. A note in the 1884 Owen County, IN history states the family arrived in 1824. That history further states Jonathan and wife were instrumental in the creation of what is now known as Wesley Chapel, M.E. Unfortunately that church building burned in 1968 and was never rebuilt. It's members eventually merged with those of Shiloh M.E. The Jonathan Payne cemetery (aka Alverson2) is located on privately owned land and needs to be cleaned and repaired. However, the current owners do keep the grounds clean. The cemetery is approximately 1/4 mile east of the former Wesley Chapel M.E. church. A further elaboration of this Payne family can be found in the Bromwell Family Genealogy, published 1910 by Henrietta Bromwell, a descendant of the Payne family line.
