Biography

Early Life

Francis Marion Payne was born on 19 Dec 1838 in Pontotoc, Mississippi, United States. [1]

His parents were Zachariah Payne and Anna Irena Tomlin. [2]

He had multiple siblings from his parents including George W Payne, Margaret Payne, Mary Cansada (Phillips) Payne, Jasper Payne, James M Payne, and Minerva Catherine Payne. [3]

In 1860, at 21 years old he lived in his father Zachariah Payne's house as a farm laborer in Pontotoc, Mississippi, United States. [4]

Marriage, Children, and Family Life

Francis would go on to marry Mary Cole Billingsley on 18 Apr 1861 in Pontotoc Mississippi. [5]

As time passed Francis had many children with Mary Cole Billingsley including, Elizabeth J Payne, Gilly F Payne, Emma L Payne, Joseph Payne, Clemmie Irene Payne, Lucie Payne, Jimmie C Payne, Maggie M Payne, David T Payne, Loyd Tilman Payne, and one un-named stillborn. [6] [7]

In 1870 Francis was living in Birmingham, Lee County, Mississippi with his wife Mary Cole Billingsley who was 25 at the time, and only had three children: Elizabeth J Payne, Zillah, and Emma L Payne. The family lived only three doors down from Francis' mother, Anna Irena Tomlin and sister Minerva Catherine Payne. [8]

In 1900, documentation and the Census states he still lived in Lee County Mississippi. He had been married for 39 years at this point to Mary Cole Billingsley and his 3 recent children were Jimmie C Payne, Maggie M Payne, and David T Payne. [9]

Millitary Career

Francis enlisted as a private in the 26th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry for the Confederacy. Eventually, he was promoted to Seargent and moved to the 31st Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. He would later exit the military as a private for unknown reasons. [10] [11]

Death

On 7 April 1903, a 65-year-old Francis would find himself in an accident. He lived in South Tupelo and was employed at a nearby cotton factory. Crossing the Mobile and Ohio railroad he got struck by a moving train. The pilot stopped the train and took him aboard. He was taken swiftly into the city and carried home where he would die a few minutes later. He was later buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi.[12] [13]
