Mary A Payne was born in 1823 in Mississippi, United States. She is thought to be the daughter of Archelous Payne (1800 - 1870) and Prudence (Unknown) Payne (1803 - ). Her parents were from Georgia but migrated into Mississippi after they married.
There are no early records that place her with her parents.
Mary married a man named Kelley who is thought to be John W. Kelly.
They had two documented children:
In the 1850 Census, her parents lived in Mississippi. They had moved further west by 1860.
In the 1860 census Mary A (age 37) was in Muddy Bayon Township, Conway, Arkansas with Archealas and Prudence. Her two children live with her.
Her father was a farmer of modest means. He didn't own any land. She was a cook along with her mother and younger sisters. [Note: The census taker listed all women over 15 as cooks, so it may be a general way of saying housekeeper.] There are other Payne families as neighbors.[1]

Mary died after 1860 aged >37.
She does not live with the couple in the 1870 Census and both die shortly after.
The birth dates for these people don't make much sense. Archelaus and Prudence are old enough to be Mary's parents but the age difference between the other children seems distant. There are other Paynes living around them, so you wonder if they are grandparents?
There were no Kelly families living near Archelaus in the 1850 census.
There is a Mary Kelly (b 1825 in Mississippi) living in Claiborne County, Miss. in the 1880 Census. She is listed a mixed race and is a servant. Her grandson, Henry Kelly, lives with her. She is servant in the Shafin household. Reference: Year: 1880; Census Place: Brandywine, Claiborne, Mississippi; Roll: 644; Page: 625B; Enumeration District: 069
