Biography

Sarah Pearson West (b.1697[1][2]-d. 1756 aged 59 years) was the 7th child of the 10 children of Thomas and Margery Pearson, who were from Pownall Fee Township, Parish of Wilmslow, in the NE part of the County of Chester, England. She married John West[3] in England, who was an Innkeeper, about 1718, at which time they were no longer members of the Society of Friends, hence their exact marriage date is not in Friends Records.

Sarah's parents came to America in 1683 in the ship ENDEAVOR, (George Thorp, Master), the ship which later carried William Penn on his return trip to England.

John and Sarah are both mentioned in her father Thomas' Will.[4]

In 1738 their son, Sir Benjamin West, the painter, was born in Pennsylvania.

Thomas Pearson learned the trade of mason in England, but he became a surveyer in America. He settled in Marple Township, Chester County, PA.

The Bulletin of Friends Historical Association published an extensive biography of Sarah Pearson entitled Benjamin West's Mother, Sarah Pearson, and Her Family.[5]

Conflict note

Sarah was the second wife of John West and it appears the marriage occurred in PA after they were both in Pennsylvania.[6]. See also the Dictionary of National Biography Oxford University Press citation on their son Benjamin West which states his father John West arrived Pennsylvania 1714.

If Thomas and Margery Pearson came to America in 1683 and settled in Pennsylvania, they came before Sarah was born in 1697. This suggests that she married John West in Pennsylvania. John had come to America about 1715 after Elizabeth, his wife died giving birth to Thomas West in 1716 in England. It is also noted that John returned to England and died there in 1792. They were born Friends but were removed when Sarah and John married because he did not have certificate of Transfer.[7] [8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Found a secondary source (see Conflict Note) showing the marriage in Pennsylvania. Will look for additional documentation as I work on her parents profiles.

Update: added multiple sources. Bio should probably be changed to remove the married in England since it appears certain they were married in Pennsylvania (it seems the actual marriage data in the profile has already been updated).

After working on an answer in g2g about a Stout regarding her marriage to a West, found this family. Found sources that shed questions and have made a conflict note with sources.
